118° point angles are ideal for use in materials such as mild steel and cast iron.
The 118° point creates easily controlled chips which are wide and thin.
Black Finish Twist Drills (also called blue finish) achieve their distinctive colour by steam tempering, a thermal process resulting in a porous tool coating.
This surface helps to keep lubricant on the tool, particularly important on the cutting edges, thus reducing friction and cold welding. The result is increased tool life.
Black finish tools are generally recommended for ferrous applications where the oxide layer aids chip flow and heat dissipation.

The alloying elements which achieve varying Aluminium Alloys have an effect on the machining properties of these materials.
This generally creates a difficult long chip formation and material which has tendencies to stick to the tool, placing a unique set of demands on tooling. Yellow Band Series contends with these difficulties.
For machining materials with Hardness < 200 HB : Tensile Strength <700 N/mm2.

135° Split Point (crankshaft point)
Split point is self centering and the short distance from the drill axis to the outer corners results in faster penetration, reducing the need for end thrust.
The 135° point should be used to cut harder steel materials especially in deep hole applications.
In these situations it will produce thicker chips minimising work hardening of the cavity.
Faster penetration reduces abrasion and friction along the cutting edges.
Cobalt HSS Twist drills are extremely hard and provide superior performance and increased tool life especially in stainless steel and high tensile steel.
Left Hand Twist drills are ideal for use with screw extractors to remove broken bolts and screws.
Bronze Finish (gold oxide) surface treatment. The metallic brown coloured low temperature temper treatment is normally only used on cobalt tools for identification purposes.
